Pakistan has raised objections on design of five dams to be constructed by India



Islamabad 14 march Pakistan has raised objections on design of five dams to be constructed by India on three Western Rivers in violation of the Indus Basin Treaty.
            Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar informed National Assembly during question hour today that of them Nimoo-Bazgo Hydroelectric Plant on River Indus is under construction while India plans to undertake construction of Dumkhar Micro Hydel Project, Marpachoo Hydroelectric Plant, Dah Small Hydroelectric Plant and Hanu Small Hydroelectric Plant.
            He said as far Nimoo-Bazgo, Pakistan may take up the issue at the level of Court of Arbitration while objections relating to others are being dealt with at the level of Permanent Indus Commission.
            The Minister assured the House that the issue would be taken up effectively to protect water rights of the country under the treaty provisions.
            To another question, the Minister said his Ministry and Thar Coal and Energy Board are vigorously pursuing to development necessary infrastructure for early completion of Thar Coal Project.
            Replying to a question, he said the present government has added 3393 megawatt to the national grid since 2008 while rehabilitation of GENCOs is being undertaken under USAID financial assistance to recover 315 megawatt of lost capacity. In addition, 1500 megawatt wind power projects are being installed in private sector.
            The Minister said after completion of Tarbela Fourth Extension, which is in design stage, the generation capacity of Tarbela Dam would increase 1410 megawatt. Similarly, the capacity of Mangla Power Station with increase to 1310 megawatt after completion of rehabilitation project.
            To a question, the Minister said strict disciplinary action is taken against meter readers for recording bogus or wrong meter reading.
            Parliamentary Secretary for Industries Syed Haider Ali Shah told the House that that Utility Stores Corporation earned a profit of over two billion rupees during the last three years.
            The House was told that two residential schemes in Islamabad are under consideration by Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation for government employees. These are a high-rise apartments schemes in G-13 Sector and a plots scheme at Bharakahu. The foundation also intends to launch a new housing scheme for federal government employees on ownership basis in sector F-13 or F-14.
