Special remission to prisoners

Prime Minister advises President for special remission to prisoners on 23^rd March – Pakistan Day

Islamabad: March 16, 2012

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has advised the President to grant special remission in the sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Pakistan Day (23^rd March), 2012.

This special remission will include:

i)                   Special remission of 90 days to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment.

ii)                 Special remission for 45 days to all other convicts except the condemned prisoners.

iii)               Special remission at sub-paras i&ii above will be admissible provided that the convicts have undergone 2/3 of their substantive sentence of imprisonment.

iv)                Total remission to female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above and to male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above who have undergone at least one third of sentence of imprisonment.

v)                  Special remission of one year to female prisoners who have accompanying children.

vi)                Total remission to juvenile convicts (under 18 years of age) who have served 1/3^rd of their substantive sentence.

This remission will, however, not be applicable to the prisoners involved in such heinous crimes as terrorism, Anti-state activities and murder.
