SOLAR POWER FOR RURAL INDIA
MARCH 2012
it is estimated that 89,808 villages in india have never
seen a light bulb glowing in their hutments. currently, over
35 million people in india lack access to electricity,an N G O
has started a programme of providing free solar lights in
villages where there is no access to electricity. each solar
lanterns in its usefull life of ten years displaces the use of
about 400-500 liters of kerosene thereby mitigating about 1,45 tonnes of co2,
assuring 4-6 litres of kerosene
consumption per family per month,it is estimated that for
1000 families of a village culster, 1450 tonnes of co2 will be
saved from the atmosphere helping to alleviate global
warming. this has made significant improvment to the life
of villagers children now can study in the evening at home
in brighter light of solar lantrns charged by solar radiations
during the day, woman can take up small jobs of sewing to
increase their income. the objective of the N G O
is to contribute in eradicating the energy poverty in indian rural
sector through the application of solar renewable energy in
india, till september 2010, off grid installed capacity of solar
PV power plant including street lights was 100 MW.
A Project launched in january2010 promises to generate
1,00 mw by 2013 and 20 gw by 2022 to deploy 20 million
solar lighting systems and to achieve 20 million square
meters thermal collector area.
