Islamabad: March 24, 2012

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that he is likely to meet the US President, Barak Obama at the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul where he is going to represent Pakistan.

The Prime Minister was talking to Dr. Michael Koch, outgoing German Ambassador who paid a farewell call on him at PM’s House here this morning.

The Prime Minister said that Parliament is working on preparing new terms of engagements of the partnership between United States and Pakistan, as for any policy the ownership and support of public is important.

The Prime Minister while congratulating the outgoing German Ambassador for his appointment as Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan said that Pakistan would continue to provide all support towards peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan. He reiterated Pakistan’s stance to encourage Afghan led and Afghan own reconciliation process The Prime Minister said that he has made an appeal to all factions in Afghanistan on the request of Afghan President for greater reconciliation.

The Prime Minister maintained that Pakistan always supported the 3-D policy (Development, Dialogue and Deterrence). The world has now recognized its importance and efforts are underway to evolve a political solution of the menace of  extremism and militancy.

The Prime Minister recalled the telethon conducted by non other but the German Chancellor her self when the historic devastating floods hit Pakistan in 2010 to raise funds for assistance of flood affectees. He also recollected his visit to Germany during which both the countries had very useful progress on a number of bilaterally beneficial areas.

The Prime Minister Appreciate the German Ambassador’s role in fostering bilateral relations between Pakistan and Germany. He said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Germany and would like to transform this relation into strategic partnership. Our bilateral relations are based on shared values of democracy, pluralism, respect for human rights and economic liberalism, he added.

The Prime Minister Appreciated German development assistance for Pakistan which increased from Euro 34 million for 2006-2007 to Euro 145.35 million for period 2009-2010. He said that Pakistan desires to enhance scope of economic relations with Germany which is 5th largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) and fourth largest trading partner globally and largest trading partner among the EU countries.

The Prime Minister also thanked the continued German Support for GSP+ as well as for commencement of negotiations for Pakistan-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The outgoing German Ambassador thanked the Prime Minister for the support, hospitality and warmth which was extended to him during his stay in Pakistan. He reiterated his continued work towards progress and prosperity of the entire region during his new assignment as German Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said that Pakistan’s role is of paramount importance.

The outgoing German Ambassador also agreed with the Prime Minister that military solution is not permanent while political reconciliation and dialogue can yield long lasting effects.


The Prime Minister asked the outgoing Ambassador to pay his best regards to the German Chancellor. He reiterated invitation to the German Chancellor to visit Pakistan.

SOUTH KOREAN AMBASSADOR MEETS THE PRIME MINISTER
Islamabad: March 24, 2012

The Prime Minister expressed hoped, during the call on him by the Ambassador of South Korea this morning at the PM House, that his first ever visit to South Korea would give political impetus to bilateral relations between the two countries

The Prime Minister said that South Korean companies have a robust investment in Pakistan across a whole spectrums of economic activity.

The Prime Minister is visiting Republic of Korea to participate in the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit from March 25-28, 2012 where Heads of Stare and Governments from major countries area participating. The Prime Minister  is likely to meet a number of world leaders and CEOs of major Korean companies.


The Prime Minister said that Inspired by South Korea’s unique experience of great economic progress, Pakistan wished to benefit from its best practices to be able to achieve similar developmental trajectory. The Prime Minister stated that the interaction with South Korean companies would encourage them to enhance their engagement and investment particularly in infrastructure and energy sectors.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan desires to further strengthen and expand relations in political, economic, trade and defence fields. There is immense potential to forge bilateral co-operation in these fields, he added.

The Korean Ambassador reiterated that Korea also look forward to the coming visit of the Prime Minister in connection with Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul. He said that Korean Companies are interested in investing in different sectors in  Pakistan. He said that exchange of delegations at various levels would further cement the existing ties between the two countries.

Pakistan and South Korea would commemorate 30thAnniversary of their diplomatic relations next year in 2013. The two countries plan a number of high profile activities including exchange of visits to mark the occasion.
