54 Senators take oath, sign roll of members

Unopposed election of Senate Chairman, Deputy Chairman

ISLAMABAD Mar 12 In a charged atmosphere, the Upper House of the Parliament on Monday achieved another milestone in the parliamentary history of the country when 54 Senators took oath amidst slogans and desks thumping. The Senators and the visitors in the gallery remembered their great leaders Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shahed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for their sacrifices for upholding the constitution and promote strong democratic norms in the country. The visitors continued chanting slogans ‘Zinda he Bibi Zinda he’ and ‘Jeay Bhutto’ to pay homage to their great leaders and renew the commitment to stand firm for fulfillment of their dream to make Pakistan strong and prosperous.

Visitors’ galleries that most often remain empty during the routine proceedings of the House were packed with the workers of the different political parties who demonstrated support to their party Senators.
Veteran Senator and a moving spirit behind Constitutional reforms, Senator Raza Rabbani was the one to win appreciation and tribute of the members as they stood at their seats in his honor, when Rabbani proceeded to sign the roll of members.
Former federal ministers Qamar Zaman Kaira, Nazar Muhammad Gondal and ex-MNA Chaudhry Manzoor witnessed the House proceedings from the press gallery.
President Asif Ali Zardari had nominated Senator Afrasiab Khattak as Presiding Officer to conduct the proceedings of the special session who congratulated the newly elected members, administered them the oath and later announced schedule for the election of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman Senate.
Secretary Senate Iftikharullah Babar had invited the Presiding Officer Afrasiab Khattak to take the Chair in wake of his nomination by the President of Pakistan as the Presiding Officer to chair the special session under rule (2) of rule (9) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business for the Senate Rules 2012.
The present Senate has 104 members instead of previous 100 as for the first time four minority members have also reached the upper house.
After administering oath, the members were called to sign the roll of members for the Senate in alphabetical order. Senator Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh was the first one and Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa was the last member to sign the roll of members.
All the 54 Senators including Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Mufti Abdul Sattar, Ahmad Hassan, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Amar Jeet, Baz Muhammad Khan, Farhatullah Babar, Sardar Fateh Muhammad Muhammad Hasni, Hafiz Hamdullah Suboor, M Hamza, Hari Ram, Heman Das, Hidayatullah, Hilalur Rehman, Ilyas Ahmed Bilour, Mir Israrullah Zehri, Kamil Ali Agha, Kamran Michael, Karim Ahmed Khawaja, Khalida Perveen, Ishaq Dar, Mudassar Sehar Kamran, Azam Khan Hoti, Daud Khan Achakzai Advocate, Dr Muhammad Farogh Naseem, Mohsin Khan Leghari, Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, Muhammad Saleh Shah,  Talha Mahmood, Muhammad Yousaf, Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, Mukhtar Ahmed Dhamra, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Malik Najamul Hassan, Naseema Ehsan, Nasreen Jalil, Nisar Muhammad, Nuzhat Sadiq, Osman Saifullah Khan, Mian Raza Rabbani, Mrs Robina Irfan, Rozi Khan Kakar, Robina Khalid, Saeed Ghani, Saeedul Hassan Mandokhel, Haji Saifullah Khan Bangash, Nawabzada Saifullah Magsi, Shahi Syed, Col ® Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, Zaheer-ud-Din Babar Awan, Mrs Zahida Khan and Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa were present in the House and signed the roll of members.
Towards the end of the sitting, the Presiding Officer announced the schedule to hold election for the offices of the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman in the afternoon at 1500 hours.
On conclusion of the proceedings of the special session, the Presiding Officer adjourned the house.
