President’s interaction with senators of PPP and allied parties
Islamabad; March 13, 2012:
President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday said that the successful completion of the Senate elections in a challenging time and the emergence of the coalition partners with overwhelming majority in the Upper House were positive steps towards institutional stability and strengthening democracy and Parliament and that the democracy has taken firm roots in the country.
The President said this during his interaction with the senators of PPP and allied parties at a dinner hosted for them at the Aiwan-e-Sadr tonight.
Chairman Senate, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Deputy Chairman Senate, Sabir Baloch , Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Mir Israrullah Zehri were also present.
The President while welcoming the newly elected senators from PPP and allied parties to the Presidency felicitated them and expressed confidence that they would prove instrumental in further underpinning democracy and the parliament. The President highlighted the important role and contribution of the Senate in the federation due to its permanent nature and equality of representation from each federating unit.
The President on the occasion also felicitated the outgoing senators for the important role played by them in difficult situation for the restoration of the democratic Constitution and other far reaching legislative measures including the landmark 18th, 19th and 20th amendments in the constitution. He expressed hope that the newly elected senators would take the legacy of outgoing senators high and work for strengthening parliamentary democracy.
The senators of PPP and allied parties thanked the President for the meeting and assured that they would work for promoting parliamentary practices and strengthening democratic values and Parliament in the country.
