India should stop terrorism in Occupied Kashmir – Kashmir Committee
ISLAMABAD 6 JUNE
Special Committee of the Parliament on Kashmir apprised the UN Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pilay of the human rights violations in the Occupied Kashmir. The meeting was held in the Parliament House and Dr. Attiya Inayatullah led the Kashmir Committee in the absence of Maulana Fazlur Rahman, Chairman Kashmir Committee, who was out of town. The Kashmir Committee informed that UN High Commissioner that the United Nations passed quite a few resolutions on Kashmir. However, instead of implementing them, India was out to crush the Kashmiris’ aspirations for freedom. The United Nations, therefore, should pressure India to stop the state terrorism in the Occupied Kashmir.
Dr. Attiya Inayatullah observed that the Kashmir issue was the oldest issue at the UN agenda. It is the duty of the Security Council to resolve it. The Indian security forces are perpetrating gross atrocities on the Kashmir under the cover of the draconian laws. An Indian soldier can torture or kill any Kashmiri. The women are raped and properties worth billions of rupees have been destroyed. The courts of law are just silent spectators. Rapporteurs of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHCR) Margaret Sekagaya and Christof Heyns visited the Indian occupied Kashmir and expressed grave concern over the human rights situation there. The Council should, therefore, pressure India to stop atrocities on Kashmiris.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed said that the Occupied Kashmir was the most highly militarized place on earth. Rape is being used as a weapon of war, as was done in Bosnia and Rawanda. The world community was following double standard. The UN got its resolutions implemented in East Tamor and Southern Sudan, but Muslims are suffering in Kashmir and Palestine and the world conscience had not awaken. The world community should stop this double standard.
The UN Commissioner appreciated the briefing on Kashmir. She said that Kashmir was an important issue. The UNHRC sent two Rapporteurs. We are considering the matter. We will monitor the situation. She said, wherever there are a human rights violations, the Council should be active.
