High level European Union delegation calls on Opposition leaders Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Senator Ishaq Dar

the European Foreign Policy Chief Mrs. catherine Ashton called on Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Mr. Ishaq Dar, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, in Islamabad on Tuesday 05 June 2012.

During the course of their warm and cordial meeting, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan conveyed the warm regards and good wishes of the former Prime Minister Mr.Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on the occasion spoke of the importance attached to Pakistan' relation with the EU, which he termed as not only the most successful regional economic organization, but also an influential player in global politics. While expressing appreciation for the fact that the EU was Pakistan's largest trading partner, accounting for about 30 percent of Pakistan's exports, the PML-N leaders emphasized the importance of reaching an early agreement on the proposal to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with Pakistan. The would not only provide greater market access to Pakistani products, but encourage urgently needed investment in the country, which would generate employment opportunities. Briefing the EU foreign Policy Chief about the unprecedented energy and power crises that has crippled the country's economy, Mr.Ishaq Dar urged the EU countries to invest in the critical field.

The PML-N leaders also lauded EU's strong support to the country's democratic institutions,  recalling with appreciation the way potential role played by the EU election Observer group in the earlier elections.

While thanking the PML-N leaders for their expression of the support for EU policies, the EU Foreign Policy Chief requested that her regards and good wishes be conveyed to Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. She also assured the PML-N leaders of EU's strong desire to deepen collaboration with Pakistan in diverse fields, including in strengthening the country's democratic institutions and promoting regional stability.
