Islamabad, June 5:  Senator Mushahid Hussain, Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence and Defence Production has congratulated the team of scientists, technicians and military personnel for demonstrating their professional prowess and scientific skill in the successful test of the Hatf-VII Cruise Missile.  Talking to the media at Parliament House today, Senator Mushahid Hussain said that he, on behalf of all members of the committee, expressed their appreciation of the successful test, which is an expression of Pakistan’s indigenous defence capability and added that deterrence is a vital factor in the preservation of security and peace in this volatile region.

Senator Mushahid Hussain said that Pakistan’s nuclear and missile capability came in response to the Indian initiatives in both these areas which injected the nuclear factor in South Asia in 1974 and the missile factor in 1988.

Given the economic problems faced by the teeming millions in both Pakistan and India, Senator Mushahid Hussain appeal to India to respond to Pakistan’s initiatives for talks aim at arms limitations rather than the two countries engaging in a debilitating and expensive arms race.  In this regard, the Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee cited the example of India which was the world’s biggest importer of arms and was poised to purchasing sophisticated armaments worth $ 50 billion through the current decade.

Concluding, Senator Mushahid Hussain said that the Senate Defence Committee would be holding deliberations regarding Pakistan’s defence policy in the context of a changing regional scenario in the next coming crucial months, where the United States and NATO were talking of a military exit from Afghanistan while the US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta was visiting India to strengthen the Indo-American military nexus against China.
