President accords assent to the appointment of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim as Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan


Islamabad, 13 July 2012:



President Asif Ali Zardari today on the advice of the Prime Minister has assented to the appointment of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim  as Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan during a special signing ceremony held at the presidency.



Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had agreed with consensus on the nomination of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim to be appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner. Accordingly, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs requested the Prime Minister to advise the President to accord his assent to the said nomination.



Those who were present during the ceremony included among others Senator Farooq H. Naik, Law Minister, Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din, Syed Khursheed Shah, Senator Islam-ud-Din Sheikh, Senator Haji Mohammad Adeel, Ch. Manzoor Ahmed, Mr. M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General, Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar, Ms. Rukhsana Bangash and Ms. Fouzia Habib.



The President, on the occasion, felicitated the members of Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for reaching consensus on the name of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim demonstrating political maturity and wisdom at this critical time when the appointment of a consensus Chief Election Commissioner was of absolute importance for credible elections. He said that appointment of a consensus CEC will enhance confidence in the elections and the electoral process which is critical element for political stability and orderly transfer of power.



The President also felicitated Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim saying that his consensus based nomination by all the political parties was a reflection of his standing and the confidence unto him.



The President remarked that the appointment of a consensus Chief Election Commissioner was an important step forward in consolidating democratic process. He expressed the hope that the appointment of a consensus Chief Election Commissioner would contribute to political stability in the country.
