President inaugurates Road Safety Institute Islamabad‏

Islamabad, 31 July 2012;



President Asif Ali Zardari today inaugurated Road Safety Institute Islamabad, the first ever road safety institute of the country, here at Aiwan-e-Sadr today.



Established by National Highways and Motorways Police, the Institute would impart traffic education and sensitize the drivers about the traffic laws, the driving hazards and the precautionary measures that need to be taken while driving.



Addressing the gathering after the inauguration of the Institute, the President complimented the Federal Minister for Communications over this singular achievement and also appreciated the efforts of officers of the National Highways and Motorways Police for their commitment and dedication to build such an important national institution adding that it demonstrated their professionalism, commitment and dedication.



The President said that the building of the first ever Road Safety Institute in Pakistan is a welcome initiative and it will help in creating awareness to make our roads safer and improve the travel and driving standards in the country.



On this occasion, the President commended National Highways and Motorways Police for their great efforts to improve traffic and safety standards. He said that NH&MP has earned the confidence of the people for their professionalism, service and introducing a new culture in traffic policing. The President expressed the hope that they would keep up their professionalism and bring greater glory to themselves and the country.



The President said that roads play a very important role in the socio-economic development. At the same time, he said, the ever increasing networks of roads and traffic also pose great challenges to the safety of traveling public. It also poses great challenge to the environment, the continued. He said that the challenge is greater in developing countries like Pakistan where traffic literacy is low and road safety education almost non existent. There is an urgent need for educating and equipping the people in road safety measures, the President emphasized.



The President while expressing satisfaction over the establishment of similar institutes in other parts of the country also expressed the hope that nationwide network of Road Safety Institutes by the National Highways and Motorways Police will greatly benefit the community.



The President during his address paid great homage to the brave jawans, officers and personals of the Police who despite all kinds of difficulties continue making efforts for the safety of the people and never hesitate offering any kind of sacrifice in the line of their duty.



Calling upon the National Highways and Motorways Police to continue their strides in serving the people and making the roads safer to travel, the President wished all associated with the establishment of the Institute every success in future.



Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan, Federal Minister for Communications and Zafar Abbas Lak, Inspector General, National Highways & Motorway Police, also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the achievements of NH&MP.



The President also distributed awards and certificates among the officers of NH&MP for their display of exemplary courage, commitment and devotion to their duty.
